Tom's Original Mousetrap

Tom's Original Mousetrap

Inspiration

I had bought a Lego Porsche about 2-3 months before working on this piece. I was inspired by the blueprints that Tom would work on from the cartoon Tom & Jerry. I thought it would be neat if Tom didn’t have such a Rube Goldberg machine, but instead a singular well crafted machine. It’s a sort of meticulous simpleness. Like wanting to be complex for the sake of it, and doing all this work just to have the simple idea of running over Jerry with a Porsche.

The Art Work

Below is the combination of the blueprint with the Lego Porsche that sits in my living room to this day. To date this is one of the most intricate pieces I’ve had to work on. I did photograph the Porsche, I found however that I had to hand draw the whole thing in Procreate because creating the design any other way would have too may details that I wanted to omit. Tom’s blueprints never had such complex drawings. I didn’t want to add any shading or show light sources here. The image is rendered flat in this method.

A Practice in Promotion

I’ve been told many times before to do a hoodie. I never really wanted to make an apparel company that thrives off of mass production. I have wanted to own something that I’ve made in some capacity however. So I made this one off hoodie and printed some copies for friends. It’s interesting how it’s easier for people to validate an idea by seeing a physical rendition of art in a format they’re familiar with. I got way more attention by posting this hoodie than any art work in the past.

At the end of the day, I just want my work sitting in many homes. To be part of other’s personal galleries.
